Discover Cretan Herbs, Teas, and Spices

Interested in eating and healing like an ancient Greek? You’ve come to the right place. The best you can do for your diet right now is implement Cretan herbs and spices from a PDO-protected region that have been famous for taking both your wellbeing and cuisine to the next level.

Oregano

At the core of the Mediterranean diet lies the fragrant oregano. One of the most universal herbs, grown and harvested in one of the most beautiful spots in Europe, where the ecosystem has infused its every sprig with fragrance that brings the Cretan hillsides to your home.

It’s a must in every meal: from the world-famous Greek salad to meats, fish, and cheeses.

Sprinkle it on top of your pizza and let it bring all your favorite toppings together.

Or enjoy the Sunday delight of a tender roasted lamb in a sauce of white wine, olive oil, and, of course, a sprinkle of oregano.

Thyme

The more ideal the landscape it grows in, the better the thyme quality. And the Mediterranean climate and limestone-rich terrain of the Cretan White Mountains provide the perfect ground for your thyme – a herb that, among other qualities, supports your immune system.

As for its use in cooking, even a small amount of thyme can give an earthy, slightly peppery aroma and fresh taste to your meal. Its flavor is the perfect chameleon that adds depth to everything, from meat, fish, and legumes to cheese and sauces, without overpowering the star ingredient.

A few sprigs of thyme can perfectly tie together a dish of crispy roasted potatoes with chicken, garlic, and olive oil.

And why not end your long day in your favorite chair with a comforting cup of tea? Stir 1–2 teaspoons of dried thyme in hot water for 10-15 minutes, add honey and lemon to taste, and let it soothe both your throat and your soul.

Malotira Mountain Tea

If you want a real infusion of antioxidants straight from the serene mountains of the Cretan Sfakia region, prepare yourself a cup of Malotira mountain tea. At an elevation of 1,700 meters, under breezes that support the production of its aromatic concentration, this tea develops soothing properties for your respiratory and digestive system. It soothes colds, aids quick recovery, and it’s believed to have potential memory benefits.

In the evening or after your meal, treat yourself to some digestive comfort with a warm cup of Malotira mountain tea. Add 3 grams to a cup of boiling water, cover it, and let it rest for some 4-5 minutes. You can always sweeten its distinctive taste with sugar or honey.

Dittany

We’ve come to the mythical national treasure of Crete – Dittany (Díktamo or Érontas), which as the legend goes, Zeus himself brought to Crete. Wild goats shot by hunters would eat it to heal their arrow wounds, while magicians would make love potions and summon spirits from the other world. Even Hippokratis would prescribe it for stomach issues and improved digestion.

Picking it from high up among the mountain cliffs represents a challenge worthy of respect, since climbers hang from rocks, using a special stick to reach it. But it’s all worth the effort. On the outside – cotton-like silvery green leaves and pale purple flowers growing from the cracks of rocks, on the inside – one of the healthiest herbs around.

With its earthy, pleasantly bitter, and slightly minty notes, it’s used as a potent tea with several health benefits. The carvacrol in its essential oil is said to have antibiotic and antiseptic properties, while its dictamen helps with cardiovascular diseases.

To prepare the tea, pour about a cup of just-boiled water over 1–2 teaspoons of dittany. Cover and let it sit for 10 minutes. Strain and serve with optional honey and lemon.

And remember: Dittany is not just any herb! It is deep-rooted in Cretan folklore and has a painstaking process of picking. It’s Crete itself in a small bag, making for the perfect travel gift.
